Shramajivi Unnayan (SU), an eminent voluntary organization working in the Bihar-Jharkhand area is registered under societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 -- (142/83-84;1313/2007-08) and FCRA for Home Ministry of India and has established itself as a centre for sustainable development. As the name suggests, it has been struggling for the upliftment “Unnayan” of the working persons “Shramajivi” providing them with adequate work, necessary working environment and proper daily wages since last 30-35years. SU has come a long way to achieve the aim taken 35years back and left no stone unturned to uplift the condition of local people suffering from all types of nuisances. SU has not only limited itself in this work, it also spreads wings to make people aware of health and sanitation, importance of basic education, women empowerment etc. SU started arranging various vocational training programs to make the youths skilful to pave their future pathway in income generation. SU formed mahila samiti to promote the concept of women self-help groups and imparted training programs to make them financially independent.
Besides the gigantic task of organising people for food security, agro-forestry based alternative employment opportunities, massive skill development training, transferring technologies, sustainable health management and reviving tribal medicines, SU has painfully but joyously taken the tasks of study and research, micro-planning, publication and networking. SU is also entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring and evaluation of different development programs by various funding agencies.
The planner behind this gigantic workshop is Mr.Pranab Choudhury, founder and present secretary of SU. He chose this interior place with an intention to understand the lifestyle and to work with the tribal people in order to show them a ray of hope at that pitch-dark time. His vision is to make a self-reliant; people centred rural society based on the conscious thinking and logical decision of the communities.
In order to materialize this dream, a training unit was established at Gobarghusi (via Patamda block), a tiny village lying buried among the Dalma range in the Chhotanagpur plateau of East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. This forest village has little to distinguish itself from the neighbouring village except that it is the headquarters of SU. The mission of the organization hovers around the nature and its people naming it “Prakriti”-to protect and enrich process of nature; “Parivartan”- to facilitate ecologically sound and human development process in the society and “Swabalambi Vikas”- to direct the changed process towards self-sufficiency and sustainability.
In this year-long working period, SU has found numerous helping hands both in the national and international font. The constant financial supports from the donor agencies, helping hand from local government, self-less contribution from numerous voluntary workers, expert advice from the board of expertise and involvement of local people, their encouragement fuel and propel the journey of the organization.
After achieving the preliminary success, SU has prioritized its interest with the global picture. The new aim of SU is to blend the ancient wisdom along with modern technology for the coming years and is asking for the same helps from all the well-wishers to be successful in the noble mission.
